An Illustrated Presentation by Lin Pardey
At twenty years old, Lin Pardey was a desert‑raised bookworm buried in office paperwork when an impulsive thought changed the course of her life: “I think I’d like to learn to sail.” Two weeks later, she ran away with Larry Pardey, a professional yacht skipper building his own cruising boat — a decision that launched one of the most iconic voyaging careers in modern sailing history.
Sixty years and more than 230,000 miles later, Lin is still captivated by the call of the sea. In this richly illustrated presentation, she invites you into the extraordinary life that led her to more than 70 countries and dozens of vessels, including two wooden, engine‑free boats she and Larry built with their own hands.
Lin shares memorable passages from circumnavigating the globe both eastabout and westabout, the exhilaration of doubling Cape Horn against the wind, and the moment she realized, after completing a second full world loop, that changing circumstances meant she could no longer plan another circumnavigation with Larry.
Her story continues with renewal and new adventure. After Larry’s passing, David Haigh sailed into her island anchorage — and into her life. Together they embarked on voyages aboard a modern cruising yacht (yes, one with an engine), facing new challenges, new oceans, and a new chapter of discovery.

About Lin Pardey
Over six decades, Lin Pardey and her late husband, Larry, built two iconic wooden, engine‑free cruising boats — the 24‑foot Seraffyn and the 29‑foot Taleisin. They went on to circle the globe twice, including beating around all of the Great Southern Capes, accomplishments that cemented their status among the most respected voyagers of their generation.
Lin chronicled these adventures in nearly a dozen influential books, including The Self Sufficient Sailor and Storm Tactics Handbook, works now considered essential reading for cruisers worldwide. Following Larry’s passing in 2020, Lin has continued voyaging with her partner David Haigh, while also mentoring emerging sailors, writers, and influencers.
An inductee into the US Sailing Hall of Fame, Lin has logged more than 230,000 ocean miles — with plans to add many more.
